Prevent Illness by Washing Your Hands Correctly, (95% of people don’t do this)!

It seems too simple, but correctly washing your hands is one of the best things you can do to prevent yourself and your family members from getting sick, but most people don’t do it correctly! That’s right, 95% of people do not wash their hands often enough or in the most effective way. With the recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), people are worried, so, here are some tips to keep you healthy:

  1. Use Soap. Why use soap in the first place? The CDC priorities the use of soap and recommends using it whenever possible and only recommends hand-sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Hand sanitizer might feel like a clinical upgrade to soap, but it's not. Soap is AWESOME and when used regularly, it is even more effective than hand-sanitizer. That's because when you lather-up with soap, you not only lift germs and dirt away from the surface of the skin so that they can be rinsed AWAY, you actually destroy viruses and disease causing germs, making them harmless as they are rinsed down the drain!
  1. Wash Your Hands Often. Most of us remember our parents telling us to wash our hands before dinner, but we should wash our hands every time we eat anything. In fact, we should wash our hands before, during and after each and every time we prepare or eat food. We should also of-course, wash our hands every time we use the toilet, blow our nose, sneeze or cough, change a diaper or clean up after a child who uses the toilet, every time we help someone who is ill or every time we touch garbage… We should wash our hands A LOT! This brings me to my next tip, which is how we wash our hands. Are you washing correctly?
  1. Wash Your Hands Correctly. This is a big one. Most people wash their hands after or during all the above activities, but they do it too quickly. This is not effective. In order to clean your hands effectively, you need to thoroughly wet and lather your hands for at least twenty seconds, making sure to cover all areas, including in-between fingers, under fingernails, on the tops of hands and all over palms of hands. You do not need to use super hot water; the important part is time. Give it at least twenty seconds. Sing the ABCs or Happy Birthday if you need to. Afterwards, rinse away all the nasty dirt and germs.
  1. Dry Your Hands. This seems simple too, but how many times do you skip this step and just shake your wet hands or let them air dry? This is not the best way to remove all microbes and disease-causing germs. Germs can be transferred more easily from wet hands, so don’t skip this step. Dry your hands thoroughly after you wash!
  1. Use Hand Sanitizer When Soap and Water is not Available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way, but they are not always available. When soap and water are not readily available, hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol can quickly reduce the number of microbes on your hands.
